Breakfast

We aim to make your breakfast a memorable meal offering only the best quality locally resourced produce including eggs laid less than 30m from the kitchen by our own free-range hens, locally made sausages and fresh produce from our extensive fruit and vegetable gardens (as available according to season).

Evening Meals & Drinks

Evening meals are available at the Old Malt Scoop Inn in the middle of the village and around seven minutes’ walk up the hill from the front gate. Guests are welcome to bring in take-away food or arrange home-delivery food from local fast-food outlets for consumption in the dining room. We will be pleased to provide cutlery and crockery to enable you to enjoy such meals in the comfort of the dining room. We are also licensed to sell beers, wines and spirits in addition to offering various soft-drinks for purchase.

Garden Facilities

Guests are welcome to use the patio and lawn to the front of Lowerfield House for their own enjoyment and relaxation. A croquet set is available on request. Guests may also enjoy the walk down through the avenue of trees accessed through the small gateway halfway up the main driveway. See how may trees you can name – there are over 50 distinct species!

Eco-friendly environment.

This may not be the most important criteria when choosing somewhere to stay but you may be interested to know that Lowerfield House is heated by extracting heat from water in the well that served this 17th Century Listed building before mains water was connected. Not only is this enormously energy efficient, but in combination with solar PV, heats the house for around 20% of the cost of using conventional oil heating. Your host will be pleased to tell you more about renewable energy if you are interested.

Local Attractions:

Right next door is the ancient Lapford Mill complex comprising the main house, a 14th Century cob building housing a rare 15th century oak muntin screen and bread oven, a connected two storey cottage and four storey water mill. To the east of the buildings is a small, private garden and further grounds extending approximately four acres where the annual 2-day Lapstock Music Festival takes place.

Other attractions are too numerous to list here. Devon is a hugely popular holiday destination for young and old alike with countless things to do from tranquil country walks over Dartmoor or Exmoor, to theme parks and the numerous glorious beaches on both the north and south coasts, all of which are less than an hour’s drive from Lowerfield House. Your hosts will be delighted to recommend places and attractions to suit your individual desires.

Peace and Tranquillity

If you are not looking for ‘get up and go’ holiday but just want to retreat to somewhere peaceful for total rest of body and mind then just stay around the grounds of Lowerfield House all day. If you are seeking privacy and some total rest then your hosts will be pleased to show you some secret corners of the gardens where you can sit and read, paint, knit, or do whatever relaxes you, without disturbance. We offer the exact opposite of a working holiday!
